Dependable End-to-End Delay Constraints for Real-Time Systems using SDNs

چکیده
Real-time systems (RTS) require dependable delay guarantees on delivery of network packets. Traditional approaches for providing such guarantees for mission critical applications require the use of expensive custom built hardware and software resources. We propose a novel framework that reduces the management and integration overheads of the traditional approaches by leveraging the capabilities (especially global visibility and ease of management) of Softwaredefined networking (SDN) architectures. Given the specifications of flows requiring real-time guarantees, our framework synthesizes paths through the network and associated switch configurations that can meet the requisite delay requirements for real-time flows. Using exhaustive simulations as well as emulations with real switch software, we show the feasibility of our approach.

Distributed Pinwheel Scheduling with End-to-End Timing Constraints
Algorithms for allocating resources and scheduling tasks are important to the success of many real-time systems with end-to-end performance requirements. In this paper, an end-to-end scheduling model based on the pinwheel scheduling algorithms is presented for distributed real-time systems. We discuss how tasks on diierent nodes may be transformed to have harmonic periods. We also present algor...
متن کاملMarkovian Delay Prediction-Based Control of Networked Systems
A new Markov-based method for real time prediction of network transmission time delays is introduced. The method considers a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural model for the transmission network, where the number of neurons in the input layer is minimized so that the required calculations are reduced and the method can be implemented in the real-time. For this purpose, the Markov process order...
متن کاملProviding End-to-End Delay Guarantees for Multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks over Unreliable Channels
Wireless sensor networks have been increasingly used for real-time surveillance over large areas. In such applications, it is important to support end-toend delay constraints for packet deliveries even when the corresponding flows require multi-hop transmissions. In addition to delay constraints, each flow of real-time surveillance may require some guarantees on throughput of packets that meet ...
متن کاملGuaranteeing End-to-End Timing Constraints by Calibrating Intermediate Processes
This paper presents a comprehensive design methodology for guaranteeing end-to-end requirements of real-time systems. Applications are structured as a set of process components connected by asynchronous channels, in which the endpoints are the system's external inputs and outputs. Timing constraints are then postulated between these inputs and outputs; they express properties such as end-to-end...
متن کاملScalable Real-time Transport of Baseband Traffic
Upcoming wireless deployments, such as C-RAN and Massive-MIMO, rely on real-time transport of baseband samples. The radios (or radio heads) in such deployments generate baseband packets once every period, which are then transported to a backend processing cluster. Therefore, to meet the real-time processing constraints, the baseband transport network must deliver the packets to the backend with...
